This paper examines the role of women in peace operations, focusing on the Italian military mission in Herat, Afghanistan, under the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). It analyzes how gender inclusion contributes to security, stabilization, and peacebuilding efforts, particularly through civil-military cooperation (CIMIC) initiatives. The study highlights how integrating women into peace operations enhances engagement with local communities, improves access to vulnerable populations, and strengthens reconstruction efforts. It also evaluates specific initiatives undertaken by Italian forces, demonstrating how gender-sensitive approaches can contribute to both military effectiveness and long-term peacebuilding outcomes. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the importance of incorporating gender perspectives into stabilization and reconstruction frameworks, arguing that women play a critical role in promoting social cohesion and sustainable peace in conflict-affected regions.this article is highly relevant as it connects gender inclusion with peacebuilding, community engagement, and stabilization—key elements in preventing radicalization and fostering resilient, inclusive societies.
